Carbon Fiber–The Total Package
Carbon Fiber –
the wonder material that has flown into space, burned up the speedway, landed trophy fish, sailed the Keys, parred the course, shredded the slopes, and now
. . . circles your ring finger.
Prized for its strength and versatility, carbon fiber has rocketed into popularity as a modern choice for a stylish, durable, one-of-a-kind wedding band.
Fibrous Inception
Carbon fiber dates clear back to the era of the lightbulb invention. Several competing inventors of the day, including Thomas Edison, made the first carbon fiber filaments by baking cotton or bamboo at high temperatures. Their tolerance for heat made these filaments the perfect conductors for electricity.
In the 1950s, Roger Bacon accidentally created the first petroleum-based carbon fibers while working for the Union Carbide Parma Technical Center. These first fibers were weak and too cost-prohibitive to create, but they set the stage for further experimentation.
Through the 1960s and 70s companies continued to work out new ways to create a stronger, more cost-effective carbon fiber. Today’s methods produce carbon fiber yarns that contain up to 95% carbon, with significant reduction in cost and a product considerably stronger than its earlier counterparts.
Not What You Were Thinking
Because it’s stronger than steel (and more lightweight, too), there are constantly new applications for carbon fiber in areas such as improved military equipment, aerospace design, automobile manufacturing, and sporting goods innovation.
Which is why you might be surprised to be reading about carbon fiber on a jewelry store website.
But the very qualities that companies prize in carbon fiber–its strength and durability–are precisely what makes it the perfect material to symbolize your commitment to your forever relationship. Carbon fiber has one of the highest strength-to-weight ratios because the fibers get stronger as they’re joined and woven together. A wearable promise that no matter what life brings, you and your partner will weather it together and only grow stronger.
Commanding Choice
Carbon fiber wedding bands have a long list of impressive benefits.
They’re:
- Able to withstand a lot of wear and tear.
- Resistant to corrosion
- Hypoallergenic for sensitive skin
- Surprisingly lightweight, so they’re comfortable over extended periods of time
But perhaps the most appealing quality of a carbon fiber ring is its striking, modern, sleek vibe. Its distinct pattern can be used to create a variety of looks, from simple to intricate.
Carbon fiber can be inlaid in gold, platinum, tantalum, zirconium, Damascus steel, and other precious and alternative metals. It’s also popular to use carbon fiber as the inside sleeve of a ring.
Customize Your Style
At Jonathan’s, we proudly offer three distinct styles of modern, eco-friendly, custom carbon fiber bands–forged carbon fiber, black carbon fiber, and silver carbon fiber.
Forged carbon fiber takes texture to the next level. It’s made by forging either a paste or tiny chopped pieces of carbon fiber together in a random pattern vastly different than the woven geometric look of its traditional brother.
Black wedding bands are very popular, and if you’re looking for something more unique than a standard polished band, black carbon fiber can give you that sleek look as well as a stand-out texture that separates your ring from the rest of the pack.
And if you’re looking for the woven texture of carbon fiber in lighter shades to match your personal aesthetic or to complement a secondary metal or material, silver carbon fiber shines.
Ask our highly experienced team members to show you all three options of carbon fiber, as well as the countless customization options to create a wedding band that is uniquely you.
